U.S. stock markets closed lower on Thursday, October 13, as a result of data showing a higher-than-expected increase in September consumer prices and rising bond yields after a U.S. Treasury auction.
The benchmark yield reversed the previous two days’ falls, rising to 4.728%. September’s U.S. inflation was 3.7%, just higher than the 3.6% forecast.
For the week ending October 7, initial jobless claims were 209,000, slightly less than the expected 210,000.
Japan’s Nikkei 225 ended Friday’s trading day down 0.55% at 32,315.99, with only 15 components rising, 208 falling, and 2 staying steady.
After six sessions of gains, Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 saw a 0.56% decline to close at 7,051.00 as fears of sustained higher interest rates were heightened by strong U.S. inflation statistics, which had an impact on financials and gold companies.
China’s Shenzhen CSI 300 dropped 1.05% to close at 3,663.41, while the Shanghai Composite dropped 0.64% to finish the session at 3,088.10.
The Hang Seng Index for Hong Kong closed at 17,759.00, down 2.73%.
Investors responded to the unexpected flat consumer price index in China and the 2.5% decline in the September producer price index.
The STOXX 600 index for Europe saw a 0.85% decrease.
The DAX in Germany fell by 0.91%.
The CAC of France fell 0.84%.
The FTSE 100 index for the United Kingdom fell by 0.67%.
WTI and Brent crude oil prices were up 3.90% and 3.76 percent, respectively, at $86.16 and $89.32 per barrel.
At $3.272, Natural Gas saw a 2.15% decline.
Gold was up 0.97% at $1,901 in trade.15, Copper increased 0.19% to $3.5968 and Silver increased 1.54% to $22.297.
At 106.53, the U.S. Dollar Index decreased by 0.07%. While AUD/USD increased by 0.01% to 1.5838, USD/JPY fell by 0.11% to 149.63.
