As part of the Yorktown Day commemoration, which honours the 1781 Siege of Yorktown, Iberdrola first took part in a Spanish Exhibit Unveiling Ceremony at the Yorktown Battlefield Visitor Centre in Virginia, the location of the final significant fight of the Revolutionary War. Iberdrola offered a donation of a Real de an Ocho, a silver Spanish dollar, as a representation of the Spanish Crown’s significant financial support to the Yorktown triumph. A panel discussion about Spain’s contributions to the resounding victory and the significance of Francisco de Saavedra, a Spanish soldier and government official, was also featured at the event.
The second event had Iberdrola representatives helping to unveil a bronze plaque honouring Diego María de Gardoqui at Lee Mansion at Marblehead Museum in Massachusetts. During the Revolutionary War, Gardoqui, a merchant from the northern Spanish port of Bilbao, was instrumental in providing the Continental Army with supplies of weapons and other equipment. Gardoqui served as the first Spanish envoy to the Continental Congress and saw George Washington’s inauguration as the country’s first president in 1789.
