German Finance Minister Christian Lindner said on Friday that he hoped US legislators would make a “grown-up” decision on discussions to extend the federal debt ceiling, warning that if they did not, the global economy would suffer.
Speaking on the margins of the G7 conference in Japan, Lindner stated that the global economic picture remains “fragile” and hoped that parties would not be misled by short-termism or partisanship.
Lindner’s remarks highlight worries as a meeting between US President Joe Biden and legislators was slated on Friday back in Washington.
The German finance minister warned that politics posed a threat to the global economy and financial system stability.
“That’s why we’re looking at the United States in particular these days and hoping that an adult decision will be made with regard to the development of American government finances and the associated effects on the global economy,” he went on to say.
Lindner further elaborated on what “grown-up” meant, stating that it meant making an appropriate judgement that was not influenced by party politics or short-term motivations.
